Umberto Saba, "The Silent One"

The Silent One (Il silenzioso)

As many things as are worldwide spread
you find in me---me, who like to wrap
myself in fair silence. Whether a liar
I am you don't know, or truthful. Just part

of me I show you, and skillfully hide
what I don't mean you to know. In peace
go therefore, provided you can find peace
far away, you who presume to read me

like an open book. Enough secrets you
heard from others. From me, the last flower
in this garland, the same is not allowed.

Whether seeing you makes me joyful or sad,
whether my slave you will be, or my lord,
my most beautiful mouth does not tell.
